From church to care center

Often, the redevelopment of a church building is the most attractive solution after the termination of church services, both financially and emotionally. But how do you organize that? How do you do justice to the past? How do you organize a good development process? And how do you bridge the development time financially?

BACKGROUND TO THIS DEVELOPMENT CONTRACT
A Roman Catholic village municipality has decided to concentrate its church activities in one of their two church buildings. This frees up the other church building for other uses, together with the accompanying parsonage and a generous size of plot.

We have guided this municipality from start to finish in making the right choices and in developing and selling the buildings as a future care center for dementia patients.

THE BUILDINGS
This is a compact building complex that is located on the edge of the village:

  • Object: Church (1925) with parsonage
  • Location: provincial village (5,000 inhabitants) in municipality with 30,000 inhabitants
  • Plot: 6,000 m2, private land
  • Church building: 800 m2, (300-400 people)
  • Presbytery: 200 m

CARRIER INSIDE THE CHURCH MUNICIPALITY

The members of the congregation agreed with the decision to take the church out of service and hoped that the proceeds from the sale could completely renovate the other church and end a financially uncertain period. In addition, there was a desire that the church should continue to exist as a building and that it could retain a social function for the residents.

Many church communities go through such a phase. We have been able to help the church board to communicate openly and well-founded on this with the church community.

Our experience is that this is very important for both the church itself - after all, it involves a lot of emotions - and for the smooth progress of the further process.
